My War Stories
1945 Enlisted after high school, Forrest was 17.
6/1945 Forrest was in basic training but while he was there the Japanese surrendered.
10/1945 Then Forrest went to signal school in Great Lakes. Then was sent to the west coast of the US to wait for a transport ship to China. Stopped in Japan to get Chinese prisoners to take to Shanghai. Then Forrest was assigned to his ship an LST. There he helped train the Chinese Navy and clear the China Sea of mines. Did some trips to Korea then finally took his LST back to the United States to retire it via the Panama Canal, Pear Harbor then finally to Galveston, Texas. At Orange, Texas Forrest was assigned to the USS Luzon which he soon retired as well.
1946 Forrest had fond memories of going to France, Italy and the Mediterranean right after the war ended. Forrest would go to Brooklyn Navy Yard to the USS Coral Sea aircraft carrier until he was discharged in 1948.
