My War Stories
1943 Drafted into the Army.
3/1943 Started in Columbus, Ohio then went to Camp Polk, Louisiana with the 8th Armored Division into the radio operations group. James passed the necessary tests to become a radio operator. Then he joined the Army Specialized Training Program (ASTP) because he had a high IQ and was on a path to be an officer at the Oklahoma University but a General made a decision that the Army did not need any more officers and needed people to run the guns so the ASTP was closed down. James then was sent to Camp Howse, Texas into the 103rd Infantry Division, 103rd Signal Company.
10/1943 Served in European theater and left Camp Shanks, New York to Marseille, France. It took 14 days to go over and actually went through a hurricane.
11/1945 Came back to the States.
